Circuits can make you sweat. They rarely give you enough load, rest, or repeatable data to build measurable strength.
By a circuit, I mean a sequence of exercises performed with deliberately limited rest. The point is fatigue: move quickly, keep your breathing high, and finish the round before you have recovered from the last exercise.
Circuits have a job. General conditioning is that job. They become a problem when they are sold as strength training.
Strength is the ability to produce force against an external load. If the load does not rise over time, strength has no reason to rise either. A hard workout is not proof that this happened.
Circuits make fatigue the main event. You move quickly between exercises, your breathing gets hard, and the next set starts before the last one has recovered. That is the design, and it is useful when conditioning is the goal.
Strength work asks a different question: can you produce more force with good mechanics than you could before? You need enough load to answer it, enough rest to perform the set properly, and a record of what happened.
Put a squat after rowing, burpees, and lunges. The next set is limited by your breathing and fatigue before it is limited by leg strength. You have trained the ability to stay uncomfortable. You have not measured or progressed the squat.
A programme works when you can see whether the work changed. The same lift, a known load, a known number of reps, and a known standard of technique give you that information.
Circuits scramble it. The exercises, rep targets, work periods, rest periods, equipment, and order change constantly. When performance improves or declines, there is no way to identify the cause. There is no useful baseline.
You cannot manage what you did not measure. “That was hard” is not enough information to write the next session.
Light weights belong at the start of a movement, after a layoff, or when you need to practise a technical position. They help you learn.
They stop being enough when the load never rises. Your muscles, bones, and connective tissue adapt to a reason. The reason is progressive mechanical load. Ten rounds of light goblet squats do not become a strength programme because the music is loud.
Rest between sets is not wasted time. It lets you repeat a hard set with enough force and control to make the work count.
Take a lifter who can squat a challenging set of five with clean depth. Give them two minutes of rest and they may repeat the work. Give them ten jumping jacks, a plank, and a sprint in place, and the next squat becomes a breathing contest.
The training effect follows the thing you train. If every set is limited by cardiovascular fatigue, you are training cardiovascular fatigue.
Circuits can be useful for general conditioning, short sessions, and people who enjoy them enough to keep moving. They become a problem when people mistake random variation and fatigue for programming, then expect muscle and strength to appear without a planned increase in training demand.
If you want to get stronger, use a few clear lifts, planned loading, enough rest to repeat hard sets correctly, and a record of the work. The programme may look boring on paper. That is not a defect. It is how you can tell whether it works.
People come to me after five circuit classes a week and ask why they do not look or feel different. They have worked hard. They are tired after every class. They have not spent enough time repeating and progressing a movement for their body to adapt to it.
Then they move into controlled weight training: a few lifts, known loads, recorded sets and reps, and blocks that build on the work before them. A month later, they report seeing muscle they had never noticed, carrying more outside the gym, and feeling stronger in daily life.
The circuit did not fail because circuits are bad. It failed because it was being asked to do a job that requires planned loading and repeatable practice. If your stated goal is strength and muscle, random variation is close to the least efficient route available outside of doing no training at all.
Look at the last eight weeks of training. Can you answer these questions?
